What is ITIL?
ITIL stands for IT Infrastructure Library, currently a set of nine books that define world’s best practice in IT Service Management. ITIL has captured the imagination of the IT community and is being adopted at a phenomenal rate as there is no real IT specific standard/framework in place for service improvement.
Last year Forrester Research said, “2005 will be the year when ITIL goes main-stream. Internal IT departments should therefore start planning their implementation toward the end of 2004”. They did. There are now some 300,000 people world-wide with the Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management.
Why do organisations adopt ITIL?
ITIL is all about increasing IT service quality, reducing IT service cost and aligning IT with the business. However it’s also about good governance and being able to demonstrate that IT Services are being managed properly to deliver these benefits. In some cases the drivers are about improving customer service and becoming more competitive or profitable; in others the drivers are about proving that appropriate governance is in place to underpin a major contract or supply relationship.
Benefits of ITIL training
ITIL defines the best practice for delivery and support of IT services. Organisations around the world are implementing service improvement programs based on ITIL to demonstrate and verify their ability to professionally support their internal and external customers.
The benefits of ITIL training includes:
- Fostering a common language of ITIL within IT service management
- Building acceptance of the need for improved processes and business alignment
- Helping build a service culture
- Building participants’ confidence in suggesting improvements
- Giving an opportunity for professional development through certification
- Helping everyone in IT service delivery see the “big picture”

Who can take part in ITIL Training?
Anyone can take part in ITIL Training. ITIL trained people will understand how to manage and deliver an IT Service which is tailored to meet the needs of the business.
Enhance What You Already Know
To prepare for ITIL testing, candidates will need to first obtain the required level of knowledge. This can be achieved through attending a training program. This approach is highly recommended for anyone who is not already very experienced or does not have access to suitable equipment and facilities to undertake their preparation.
All EXCOM Education training includes additional services designed to ensure effective preparation for certification tests, such as access to lab facilities for practice, unlimited post-course technical support, and personalised advice and guidance regards the individual candidate’s progress.
Testing
To register for a test, call your nearest EXCOM branch and everything will be arranged for you. When you call, let the EXCOM staff member know that you want to register for an ITIL examination and have the following information available:
- Your testing ID number (first time applicants are assigned one)
- Test name or number
- Date and time you wish to take the test

Certification examinations for the Foundation Certificate may be taken in either of two ways: in the classroom at the end of training or on-line at a later date.
Revision material and mock examinations are available to help those who want to delay the exam. Group bookings for in-class examinations can also be made available on request.
